Microcement

What is Microcement?

Microcement is a cutting-edge, seamless decorative coating that transforms bathrooms into sleek, modern sanctuaries. This ultra-durable, versatile material offers a smooth, polished seamless, making it both stylish and practical. Its water proof, and extremely durable, even for foot traffic. Microcement can be applied to walls and floors, and especially wet areas like showers.

Qualities of Microcement:

 Seamless Finish, no Grout lines.

Micro cement looks like a cross between polished concrete, venetian plaster and Tadelakt.

The seamless finish of microcement walls is a standout feature that sets them apart from traditional wall treatments. Unlike tiled or paneled surfaces, which often reveal visible seams, joints, or grout lines that can disrupt the visual flow, microcement creates a continuous, unbroken expanse. This smooth, fluid surface is achieved through a meticulous application process, where the material is troweled on in thin layers, resulting in a uniform texture that feels like polished stone or sleek plaster. The absence of seams not only lends a refined, minimalist aesthetic that complements modern and traditional design schemes but also ensures a cohesive look across large surfaces, making spaces feel more expansive and harmonious. Additionally, this seamless quality eliminates crevices where dust, dirt, or moisture might collect, significantly reducing the effort required for cleaning and maintenance. Whether applied in residential or commercial settings, the seamless finish of microcement walls offers both a practical advantage and a sophisticated, uninterrupted canvas that enhances the overall ambiance of the space. If you are looking for a seamless hand troweled concrete or plaster finish in your wet rooms, this is it.  Microcement creates a hygienic, low-maintenance surface ideal for wet environments. Applied in thin layers over existing floors, walls, it delivers a seamless high-end aesthetic without the durabilty problems associated with Tadelakt and Venetian Plaster . Available in a range of colors and textures, microcement ensures a timeless, sophisticated look that’s as tough as it is beautiful.

Durability:

Microcement is hard and has high compressive strenght. Its strong enough for heavy foot traffic, table tops, and even garage floors. It's highly resistant to abrasion and chipping.

Microcement vs Tadelakt

First, let me say I love Tadelakt. I personally went to Marrakach, Morrocco in 2008 to learn Tadelakt. We learned the process as we renovated the walls of an old Riad (hotel) and it was a fantastic experience. I do think Tadelakt is beautiful, but in the United States there are major issues with it's durability. It is after all 2,000+ year old technology, relying on lime and clay slurry mixed with a special olive oil soap based sealer to give Tadelakt is water resistant qualities.

Resin-based microcement is an advanced decorative coating that blends cement, fine aggregates, and high-performance polymer resins to create a seamless, ultra-durable finish for bathrooms. The resin component enhances flexibility, adhesion, and resistance to water, cracks, and wear, making it ideal for high-moisture environments. Compared to Tadelakt, a traditional Moroccan plaster, resin-based microcement is many times more durable, resisting abrasion, stains, and humidity far better while maintaining its stunning, seamless elegance over time. Tadelakt just doesnt have the compresive strength to give it enough durability for flooring. Another issue is that Tadelekt is not inherently waterproof. It requires a saponifide olive oil/soap mixture for its water proofing. Unfortunately, this traditional sealer doesnt hold up to the degreasers found in modern shampoos and bathrooom products. The ammonium laureth sulfate in your shampoos is literally ripping through that olive oil/ soap sealer. Tadelakt is a high maintenence finish requiring resealing twice per year in the best of conditions. For the cost to install Tadelakt, customers are very unhappy when the finish starts to fail in less than a year. These issues with Tadelakt are what drove me learn about Microcement.
